Next they'll be telling us that unc was the first team with an African-American on it.
Say, since ol unc is so "progressive" with race relations - how's phil ford doing these days?

Phil is doing great. He's making a base salary of about $350k plus incentives.

Not with unc he ain't. And even you have to admit that unc treated him like the "house nigger," for many a year. Dangling the carrot of an assistant head coaching job in front of him while they allowed phil to do radio and glad hand the parents of potential recruits.

Phil loves Carolina, no matter what you or Lee think. But Phil's Carolina ties are why he has the job he has right now. And no, he was in line to be the head coach at UNC until the DUI's, so I'd say he's fortunate to be where he is today.
Phil is shafted by UNC because you all say UNC used Phil, yet you accuse the UNC administration of "cover ups" regarding the DUI's. Which is it? Who is to blame here? Phil, UNC, both? I'm willing to bet both.
Personally, I think Phil lost any chance to be the head coach when he got his first DUI.

You're gonna have to show me some pre-DUI talk by dean on that. As progressive as you like to think unc is - ain't no way they are hiring a black basketball coach.

I agree. I'll add, he lost all chance to be an ASSISTANT coach under anybody else but dean.

I think the Catholics call it 'pennance.'

Hey sz, tell the story about how Dean sat-in at lunch counters in the 60's!
Yet another unc myth.

No need. I can just look at unc's "track record".

I don't know many Dean stories as I haven't been a UNC fan my entire unlife like you.

Dickie contacted Tubby Smith just for the hell of it right?

Hmmmm, looks like historical revision AGAIN to me. Deano's "first year" at Chapel Hill was 1958. 6 years before this act he was ensuring obedience to.
How was he supporting the CRA of 1964 in his "first years" if his "first years" were before that? Typical Carolina BS. Take a supposedly true incident (after BS like this, and unc's "visual estimations", who knows what are lies), and make it look like Deano was doing this the day he arrived on campus.

Dean was head coach starting in 1962, not 1958.

Am I the only one who finds extreme irony in this? You mean to tell us that you think a juicer like the meddler didn't occasionally drive himself home after downing a fifth or two at a chappa heah coctail party? Next thing you know, one of you holes is gonna say the school didn't know the meddler was a rummy. Puh-LEEZE! I mean, if that's not the pot calling the kettle black (npi).

Well, it was 1961, not 1962, and he arrived in ch as an assistant coach in 58. His first year in ch was 1958. Just going by what the article said. "his first years in ch".

Yeah, it was 1958. The year he fell in love with the town sitting under the Davie poplar, admiring the beauty of the dogwoods and pines..........drunk as a skunk.

i can just picture dean, hobnobbing with the good ol' boy network that is the ram it club back in 1962 and saying in his nasally ass voice.
"you know, blacks just aren't treated right."

Oh, Dean was one of the first to have a black on his team. After watching Texas Western (all black) blister Kentucky (all white) in the 1966(?) title game he knew he needed the brothas to win. Selfish prick.

No, it was probably more like...."you know, if we had one or two of THEM on our team we could create a pretty good basketball program in the long run."

Remember the picture of DEAN on the news at the KERRY / EDWARD rally?
Dean = Loser = Drunk = Liberal = Democrat
