..............obviously you aren't a part of a strong mathematics institution. If you did, you would realize that average means that if you took any notional student from NC State and one notional student from unc, they would only be 75 points apart in their SATs. The fact that it's an "average" doesn't mean it's any more likely that one student would be massively better than the other, unless you have the statistical distribution of scores at your finger tips.
Actually, the only way you can argue that its "a shitload" is if you establish that NC State is accepting more individuals who are massively intelligent and blowing the Hell out of the SAT. Only
then could you make some kind of argument that thousands of NC State students are complete idiots resulting in a 75 point average difference.
...in other words, you're full of shit. You have no information to make a claim that 75 points "is a shitload".

Wow. You are EXTRA dumb. And bad at reading.
The highest score on math+reading (You know, what we are talking about here) is 1600. Jeeezus, I know NCSU is dumb, but did you really think the average score was 1186 out of 2400???
Also, you can't measure "difference" by percentage, because that assumes a uniform distribution. Nothing is uniformly distributed. It's normally distributed (standard normal, to be precise. Hence, "standardized" test). The standard deviation for the combined score is about 140.
So the "percentage difference" is the area under the normal curve between 1186 and 1250. That difference is a pretty significant 18%. For the record, that is the difference between average and retarded on the IQ test.
By the way, 1250-1186 = 64, not 75 you bunch of fucking retards.I think my work here is done.

What the hell are you rambling about? This isn't about unc at all. The stupid list posted denigrating unc requires a school to have a combined 1250 in math and reading to be considered. unc meets the minimum threshold, state does not. I didn't make up the requirement, they did.
BTW, State is a school with an engineering program. NOT an engineering school. Besides, your assumption would be wrong, unc scores higher in math too:

Dread,
Yeah, the ignoring of Pert has definitely increased the level of conversation quite a bit.
Champs,
I'm going to attempt to explain this logically, but I have absolutely zero faith that you'll actually listen or consider what I have to say because... well... you're just trying to win a pissing match, not actually have a rational conversation. You still haven't "figured it out" that the difference between NC State SAT scores and unc SAT scores are negligible and your assertion that it being an average makes the score "a shit load" is just ######ing stupid.
If you have a room of 10 students from 'School A' and 10 students from 'School B', averages don't tell you which majority of student is smarter. Let's say school A Scored 1200, average, on the SAT and School B scored 1150 on the SAT. If School A had two students that scored perfect on the SAT, then that means that the majority of the students, excluding the outliers, actually scored a 900. I'm not saying that unc or NC State are on either side of this boat; I'm just trying to get it through your thick skull that simply saying "DER! AVERAGE BIGGER! WE IZ ARE SMRTER!" isn't how it works. If you want to say "hey, let's just pull a random student off NC State's campus and a random student off unc's campus and see who's smarter, you would need to look at the median, not the mean.
I'm sorry you call it "math retardation". I call it pre-algebra (you know, the class Hansborough had issues passing to become eligible to come to carolina).
See, what I did there, Champs? I explained how you can't take a 64 point swing and claim it means anything significant using simple math and by not being a little prick about my school loyalty. It's called being rational. Try it.
BTW, if you could actually read, you'd see that the number "75" didn't come up because no one could subtract 1186 from 1250; it came up because of this statement: "You're bragging about a difference between less than 75 points on the SAT?" Just incase you didn't learn that level of math at the "flagship", 64<75.

Feel free to COMPLETELY IGNORE the statistical reasons I proved that is was significant, probably because you don't understand it. That's ok. To your point:
Over a large sample of a standardized normal distribution, the median will approximate the mean (and vice versa). Sorry kid, your argument sucks. An entire student body is MORE than enough of a sample size for the mean and median to converge. But just for FUN, let's look up both:
NCSU 2010 median: 1185

First off, your argument has no mathematical merit. Way to dodge AGAIN by pointing out a typo (it's pretty obvious I meant to use "it" instead of "is". Feel free to actually address the point, but try to bring something to the table.
You used a terrible example to talk about how somehow the average score doesn't represent the average student. You proposed the median instead (they're nearly identical). What you neglect to realize, however, is that the SAT is DESIGNED so that the average scores represent the average student. The test is
standardized. Judging from this conversation, I don't think you have any idea what that means.

...and again, this is your logic. What I gave you was a perfectly SOUND example. You can argue validity, but the effect is sound and the statistical effect is correct. The only way you can make a
valid statement that the mean and median are nearly identical is if you are also going to tell me that the standard deviation is extremely small... in other words, if you have a University full of nothing but "average" students.
If you want to
assume NC State is full of nothing but "average" students with 1186 scores and unc is full of nothing but "average" students with 1250 scores, then you are completely correct that any given student is probably smarter from unc
because that would be the only way you could know for a fact that the mean and median are almost identical.
However, because of how intelligent you champion yourself to be, I know you wouldn't agree that this assumption is accurate. I don't know how much clearer I can make it so I'll give you the last word to respond or to just resort to name-calling and baseless intelligence-bashing. The carolina Way!

No, it's not sound. This is what I am trying to tell you. The distribution you described wasn't even close to standard normal. The distribution of scores, (even if tests weren't curved to be normal, which they ARE, the
central limit theorem guarantees a normal distributionThe distribution CANNOT look like that, because of sample size. It MUST look like this:

So your example is irrelevant.
