In my travels throughout North carolina I have noticed an eerie coincidence. To wit: unc fans seem overwhelming liberal and NC State fans are overwhelmingly conservative.

Not always the case my dear questioning defender of Natural Light half drained kegs. The overwhelming amount of unc fans have no connection to the school other than: 1) they were born in North carolina 2) they are part of an urban gang 3) they just graduated from the Ned Beatty whitewater rafting charm school 4) they had little else to do with their lives other than pull what what is presented to them as pristine. Most are of limited intelligence generally, a tour of the local community college here or there with their prized unc hat turned backwards as they flunked the first general quiz on precise numbers between 4 and 6 while they talked up a transfer to chapel hill marks the high achievers. The usual rabble are measured in large volume by how many times they can mutter "my heals" while they remove the grease stains from their Dale Jr NASCAR jacket. Of course this rabble is also very provincial as well, limited trips to the county seat for a break from the usual fish plate and fries on Friday night are the norm. Their tastes are common tastes and they aren't heavily political but rather moron redux.
So no, the fans are not generally liberal. The great problem is that anyone can be a fan. It is too easy to describe, any understanding of how the system is stacked in chapel hill is no matter to these common folk. They need something to raise their stature and attaching themselves to "my heals" will work as good as anything.
As for the fans of the ESL team in Raleigh, they pretty much have a direct connection to the school. They either 1) attended 2) work for the school or 3) have a parent that attended. The reasons to pull are too hard and the school is generally very conservative both socially and politically.
Not to be missed about unc "fans" is that the school generally despises them and their common culture. Sure, they are allowed to root for "my heals" but they should never fail to know that what goes on in those classrooms over there is nothing more than the endless attempt to reach the Gramscian hegemony whereby that common culture is destroyed.
Liberal not so much, stupid......yes indeed.

Um, because obviously fans of schools don't live vicariously through the reputation of the students? Like you do with Duke?
I'd be willing to bet that it's because conservative religious farming families have historically sent their kids to school for FARM101 since 1. it's a sure thing 2. their reputation has been harvested for decades. If you're a conservative good ol' boy and like football, then it's easy to identify with a school that stables the self-projection.

There's a clear difference between fans of athletics and fans of the University.
Political leanings: the sports fans are equal on both sides. Those with connections: conservative and liberal split. With friends at both schools, it's pretty much all my liberal leaning friends went to unc, everyone else to State.
