That corner about killed me back in the day.
Can't imagine that S&D is under new ownership. Although my friend (he's a unc grad, so he can't be too big a friend) may have retired???? He's probably in his mid-50's by now.
Staug, do you know if BW sold?
It was going to hell from what I heard. The hours posted were never honored and laundry was subject to being thrown on the sidewalk if the attendant decided to knock off early. However, he would not leave, he would sit inside drinking up the profits and waving at the patrons who returned to their still damp piles of laundry. Of course they were drunk from Wahoos or the Tiger, due to poorly stocked spirits, so it got ugly a few times. I, of course, do not know who "he" is, but I will find out shortly. I am certain there are two sides to these stories.
I learned all this from a
friend who visited regularly. Never saw it first hand. When she found it was for sale she told me about it. We buy commercial and residential properties from time to time if it looks like a winner, but this deal did not. The reputation had gone pretty sour and the place needed a ton of work. Whoever bought it has a "under new management"
mural across the front glass.
I did hear it was an awesome place back in the day though. Some of the people I know who knew it when it was in its prime said it was the funnest place in the 'boro to hang and most of them said they never did the first load of laundry there. They all agree that it took a rapid turn for the worst about a year or so ago. Despite this unfortunate turn, it is still revered as a hallowed ground of sorts.
As a business idea in the era and location it opened, it was genius IMO.
