Williams extends term with Heels
North Carolina announced Thursday that basketball coach Roy Williams has agreed to a four-year contract extension through the end of the 2014-15 season.
WHAT IT MEANS: Williams, 56, could spend the rest of his career at his alma mater. "I am excited about coaching at Carolina and look forward to these next eight years," he said in a statement. "I am past the point in my career where people refer to `that young coach Roy Williams,' but I know I can go this long. I just hope my players can put up with me."
NO TRADES: After North Carolina's stunning overtime loss to Georgetown in the NCAA East Region final, Williams said he wouldn't trade his players for anybody. Thursday, North Carolina's administrators made it clear they wouldn't trade their coach for anybody, either.
THE BOSS SAYS: "Roy Williams is the most complete coach in the country. I knew when we hired him he was an outstanding basketball coach, but he has also exceeded our every expectation in the manner in which he runs a basketball program." -- Athletics director Dick Baddour
LAST SEASON: North Carolina was 31-7 with an overtime loss to Georgetown in the NCAA East Region final. The Tar Heels shared first place in the ACC regular-season standings and won the ACC tournament.
UNC HIGHLIGHTS: Won 2005 NCAA title and is 106-30 in four seasons.
CAREER SUPERLATIVES: Has five Final Four appearances and will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September. Williams is 524-131 in 19 seasons and reached 500 wins in fewer seasons than any other coach in history.
Money Matters
Base salary: $325,000 per year.
Expense allowance: $30,000 per year.
Supplemental income: Average of $1,352,508 per year (paid by university).
Radio/TV: Approximately $400,000 a year (deal expected to be signed soon).
Total package: Average of $2,107,508 over eight years.
Bonus opportunities: For qualifying for and advancing through the NCAA tournament; for graduation rates in the basketball program that meet or exceed the overall student body.
