How about this guy?
Josh Beckett: 1st in ERA, but this doesn't do him credit. He's almost a FULL RUN BETTER than your guy Verlander, who is in 4th. 1st in hits allowed per 9 innings. 3rd in winning percentage (Verlander is 5th) 1st in WAR (for pitchers) Here's the key: it's in a division where the average winning percentage is .538, and 4/5 teams are .500 or better. (AL Central has 2/5 teams better than .500, so Detroit really only has to play ONE good team) |

Gotta go with C5T on this one. Beckett has good numbers and is in a legit division. AL Central doesn't scare a whole lot of people

Just a quick glance, but Verlander...in his games...has pitched against better teams than Beckett.
Beckett does pitch very well against the Yankees (twice), which is all that counts in that division. Plus, the last 5 games Verlander has given up 4 ER averaging over 8 IP per game. Josh has given up 8 in his last 5 games averaging 7 IP per. Beckett had a great May. Verlander has turned it up in June. |

If Verlander's arm doesn't fall off, he'll be the Cy Young winner. Sorry, Beckett - great numbers and a pretty compelling argument as well, but Verlander is...
...averaging almost a full inning more per game ...striking out more batters ...and perhaps even more impressively for a power pitcher, walking less batters too. Verlander being the harder thrower is always going to give up more hits than Beckett, because that's what fireballers do. No love for Weaver? |

I'm out on the deck watching the Tigs vs Arizona on mlb tv.
Just another day at the office for Verlander. 8 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 14 K's. |

In his last six starts, he's 6-0 with a 0.72 ERA. He's struck out 51 and walked six over that span, which doesn't even include his no-hitter.

Verlander gets the nod right now for sure, but eventually he'll pitch against somebody good.
Verlanders last 5 teams pitched against: Arizona, Colorado, Cleveland, Seattle, White Sox Becketts: Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, NY Yankees, Detroit, Cleveland Cleveland obv a wash. Yanks are clearly the best offense in the league (and beckett's already had to pitch against them THREE TIMES already). Detroit isn't that far behind. Philly is obviously one of the best teams, on and on. So I think Verlander will revert to human form once he hits a stretch of games against good teams. Not one game here and there. |

Verlander today....
QUOTE The Mets had scored a team-record 52 runs in their previous four games. Verlander (11-3) held them to one run and seven hits. He finished June with a 6-0 record and a 0.92 ERA ho hum |

Giants, also, are one of the worst hitting teams in the nation.
And then they fired their pitching coach. |

Scherzer has been pitching like crap lately. Don't know what that has to do with Verlander. |

Ho hum. Win #12. 7.2 innings, 0 ER, 9 K's, 0 BB.
And most importantly, by rule, he cannot pitch in the All Star game. Go get 'em Beckett! lol |

Verlander wins #19 tonight vs Tampa Bay.
That's 7 wins in his last 7 starts. • 1st in AL in W (19) • 1st in AL in IP (209.2) • 1st in AL in SO (212) • 2nd in AL in ERA (2.28) • 1st in AL in WHIP (0.88) • 1st in AL in W% (.792) • 2nd in AL in CG (4) He's got a good chance of winning the pitching triple crown (W's, K's, ERA). Weaver's ERA is 2.10, Verlander's is 2.28. Since 1945, the following pitchers have won the triple crown. So anyone want to argue about the Cy Young award? lol Sandy Koufax (3 times) 1963, 65, 66 Steve Carlton 72 Dwight Gooden 85 Randy Johnson 2002 Jake Peavy 2007 Roger Clemens (twice) 97, 98 Pedro Martinez 99 Johan Santana 2006 This post has been edited by Lee Corso: Aug 22 2011, 09:58 PM |
