Insofar as Steam, can't believe you haven't heard of it.

Steam is a content delivery, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications service and platform developed by Valve Corporation for digital entertainment. It is currently used to digitally distribute and manage games including Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Steam has some possibilities. (There are kinks and quirks as you well might imagine). I think it's lost some momentum as of late, but imagine, instead of paying $14.95 for a CD, you simply enter your CC and DL it to your HD.
