He's off to a hot start in ATL

Though it’s impossible to overstate the importance of the Nets landing an All-Star running mate in their effort to keep Williams, the real winner may ultimately wind up being the Hawks. In the span of two hours Monday, new GM Danny Ferry rid the franchise of Johnson’s crippling contract and eradicated the draft miscue of the decade, Marvin Williams, who was traded to the Jazz for Devin Harris. If not for the Hawks choosing Williams No. 2 in the 2005 draft -- one spot ahead of Deron Williams and Chris Paul, respectively -- none of what happened Monday would’ve transpired.

But back to the Hawks, who cleared $29 million in cap space for next season and thus put themselves in position to pounce if Howard, an Atlanta native, wanted to join fellow Atlanta native and former AAU teammate Josh Smith in 2013. What’s more, the Hawks would have ample room for another max player next summer, and one executive I was on the phone with Monday night spat out the name before I could even finish my rhetorical question: Chris Paul. So basically, Monday was just about the best day in Atlanta Hawks history -- which isn’t saying much, which is why it was just about the best day in Atlanta Hawks history, with the strong promise of much better ones to come.

We knew when the Atlanta Hawks hired Danny Ferry as their general manager that it would mark a wholesale change in the way this franchise did business, but nobody expected the change to be this drastic, this fast.

With two landmark moves in a period of hours Monday that wiped nearly $90 million off the payroll, the Hawks went from a franchise that considered losing in the second round of the playoffs to be the pinnacle of human achievement to being one that could matter -- I mean really, truly matter -- for the first time since Dominique Wilkins was making nightly highlight films.

Williams WAS a horrible pick. But Marvin was selected at #2. Relatively speaking , that makes 'im worse.

unc > Duke NBA players does not necessarily mean Roy > K NBA players. I think it's safe to say a very good amount of Roy's players at unc have been completely underwhelming.

Someone compile a list of the top 10 pros for each. To be fair, you would have to go back to KU for Roy.

Players currently playing? Yes. Players who have come out of college in the past 15 years? Yes. I assumed those were the players you were talking about, since players that retired years (or decades) ago have zero relevance to this thread.

Coach K has been putting out better all-around NBA players since Dean retired. In fact, Grant Hill is/was a better NBA player than anyone unc put out since Jordan, so the tide really started turning almost 20 years ago. It's absolutely not just a domination of Roy. But if that's what you want to believe, well... Whatever helps YOU sleep at night

I was not saying nor do I believe that Roy has better NBA players than K. So when unc fans say that unc > Duke players in the NBA, they really are stretching back a bit because in the last 10 or so years Duke players have been just as good, arguably better. Certainly better at the moment.

First off, it's kinda obvious that unc hasn't taken nearly enough crap for some of their big men who have been first round draft picks and done almost nothing in the league. For so long they talked about Duke draft busts, but Joe Wolf went #13, JR Reid went #5, Eric Montross went #9, and Pete Chilcutt was a first round pick. Considering that they spent YEARS giving Duke fans grief over the career of NBA All-Star Christian Laettner, who was drafted during that same time period and ended up being a better NBA player than all those guys combined, that's pretty bad. And that's BEFORE you get around to Roy's laughable track record at unc of actually putting out productive NBA bigs.

Second, how many of those guys were better than Grant Hill? Brad Daugherty, who was drafted 26 years ago, comes close. How many were better than Elton Brand? Carlos Boozer? Even Luol Deng? Maybe a few, but that's 15 years worth of the absolute best collection of talent to come through college during that period, coached by, at the time, the best coach in the game at the peak of his career, who was widely regarded as the best developer of NBA talent out there. Take out Daugherty and Smith, drafted in '86 and '87, and the pickings for NBA stars get really slim. When "Half-Man, Half-Glass" Vince Carter, possibly the biggest waste of talent the NBA has seen in the past three decades, is the BEST NBA player you've put out in 25 YEARS, that's not a lot to brag over.

The simple fact is that Duke started putting out better NBA players than unc well before Roy took over in Chapel Hill... it just took the rest of the world a while to figure it out.
