First off, your argument has no mathematical merit. Way to dodge AGAIN by pointing out a typo (it's pretty obvious I meant to use "it" instead of "is". Feel free to actually address the point, but try to bring something to the table.

You used a terrible example to talk about how somehow the average score doesn't represent the average student. You proposed the median instead (they're nearly identical). What you neglect to realize, however, is that the SAT is DESIGNED so that the average scores represent the average student. The test is standardized. Judging from this conversation, I don't think you have any idea what that means.

...and again, this is your logic. What I gave you was a perfectly SOUND example. You can argue validity, but the effect is sound and the statistical effect is correct. The only way you can make a valid statement that the mean and median are nearly identical is if you are also going to tell me that the standard deviation is extremely small... in other words, if you have a University full of nothing but "average" students.

If you want to assume NC State is full of nothing but "average" students with 1186 scores and unc is full of nothing but "average" students with 1250 scores, then you are completely correct that any given student is probably smarter from unc because that would be the only way you could know for a fact that the mean and median are almost identical.

However, because of how intelligent you champion yourself to be, I know you wouldn't agree that this assumption is accurate. I don't know how much clearer I can make it so I'll give you the last word to respond or to just resort to name-calling and baseless intelligence-bashing. The carolina Way!

No, it's not sound. This is what I am trying to tell you. The distribution you described wasn't even close to standard normal. The distribution of scores, (even if tests weren't curved to be normal, which they ARE, the central limit theorem guarantees a normal distribution

The distribution CANNOT look like that, because of sample size. It MUST look like this:



So your example is irrelevant.

NCSU 2010 mean: 1186

Those aren't predictions. Those are the ACTUAL VALUES. Gee, that sure does look similar to me. Especially considering the median could ONLY end in 0 or 5. There are no assumptions at all here.
