From Hoosier Sports Nation : Congrats Coach K !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the day you sat on Coach Knight's bench as a graduate assistant to today, you have always represented your teams , yourself and your country in the highest.

Thanks coach for a remarkable run in the Olympics !

QUOTE
Mike Krzyzewski's last game as U.S. coach will be for an Olympic gold medal.

As the American men's team prepared to play Spain for the Olympic title, Krzyzewski told The Associated Press that the game will be his final one as national coach, a position he has held for seven years.

Krzyzewski had left open the possibility of staying with the team beyond the London Games, but before practice on Saturday said these will be his last Olympics.

When asked if he was sure, Krzyzewski didn't hesitate before again saying, "yes," this will be his last game.

Krzyzewski, who has led Duke to four NCAA championships, took over the U.S. team in 2005. In the past seven years, he has restored the powerful American program, which was in disarray following a third-place finish at the 2004 Athens Games .

QUOTE
Picking the Man Who'd Lead Basketball's Dream Team to Gold

QUOTE
"It all starts with the right coach ... getting the right leadership in place." But leadership success is context-specific. How did Colangelo determine who best fit the description? How did he zero in on the right person? He had dozens of acclaimed coaches clamoring for the opportunity, several already in the Hall of Fame. I asked Colangelo about the selection process and how he separated the good from the potentially great.

Colangelo told me it was about understanding and connecting with a vast array of personality types, getting the trust of NBA superstars who could sacrifice ego for the good of the team . First, Colangelo wanted to hear first-hand what it was like to be a player on the Olympic basketball team. It's a unique experience, and he didn't want to assume he had all the answers. Picking the "right" coach depended on his understanding how the players felt and what motivated them

QUOTE
Little by little, Colangelo started creating a composite mental image of the kinds of goals, emotions, fears, and challenges an Olympian might face on the world stage. Only then could he shift the conversation to the ideal coach for this context. "Above and beyond a high basketball IQ and a good track-record, what qualities should our dream coach possess?" Colangelo asked the coaches and players. After some heated back and forth, a small handful of critical qualities emerged as priorities, including integrity, passion, transparency, and empathy. Despite the diversity of opinion and personal background, everyone agreed that these qualities were non-negotiable. To Colangelo, this upfront consensus was critical for future buy-in.

Armed with an agreed-upon set of qualities, Colangelo was now comfortable soliciting candidate names from the group. He gave specific instructions to nominate potential coaches only if they fit the just-established requirements. "A bunch of names went on the white board, all with stellar win-loss records. We talked about each one, weighing the pros and cons," Colangelo told me

QUOTE
At one point during the debate, Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith of unc—soft-spoken off the court—voiced "loud support" for Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K, head coach of Duke University. As Colangelo told this story, he couldn't resist the opportunity to set me straight, "You're from Louisville and you think that the Louisville/Kentucky game is a big deal and a big rivalry. But that's nothing compared to the rivalry when unc plays Duke. They play for blood. So when Coach Smith told us that no one will connect with and motivate the players like Coach K, the whole crowd was silent. That was a big moment for all of us ."

QUOTE
A few minutes later, Colangelo sent around a secret ballot box and asked everyone to cast a vote. "But make no mistake," he said, "I had to cast the final vote. With decisions this big, you can't pass the buck."

Colangelo was happy with his choice. "Mike saw the whole chessboard, knew we needed a new culture, and had an astute understanding of what makes players tick. I knew right then that he could get them to come together as a team," he explained .

QUOTE
Colangelo invited me to a closed-door practice in Las Vegas. I noticed something peculiar. Kobe Bryant didn't shoot the ball even once during the entire practice. At the time, Bryant was the reigning NBA scoring champ. Shooting the ball, after all, was why he was paid millions of dollars in the NBA. Coach K told me, "Kobe recognizes that he's setting an example. He's telling his teammates that he doesn't need to shoot to contribute to this team. And more important, his teammates believe him." After that practice, the team packed their bags and went to Beijing on a gold medal quest. They didn't lose a single game .

QUOTE
After the 2008 Olympics, the players' three year tour of duty was over. "We could have ridden off into the sunset with gold around our neck," Colangelo said, but he turned to Coach K and asked, deadpan, "Do you want to do it again?" This time Coach K did not have an immediate answer. He would have to think about it .

QUOTE
After a few nail-biting weeks, the pair met at the Park Hyatt in Chicago, hometown to both men. "It was pretty late, so the bar was closed," Colangelo said. "We grabbed a bottle of wine and ordered a pizza in the lobby, which seemed like the right thing to do for a couple of native Chicagoans. We sat there for hours." Coach K resisted Colangelo's overtures at first, saying, "It's not going to be the same this time around." Colangelo shot back, "Good! Why would you want it to be the same?" Suddenly it made sense to both of them—the challenge—and Coach K signed up for his second tour of duty . What did they do next? "We ate the rest of our pizza, of course."

Mike Krzyzewski's last game as U.S. coach

How will he parlay this into another raise from dook?

He's not going to hang around if Stern is going to limit players to only those age 23 and under

I remember when winning a gold medal in basketball used to be a big deal. Not so much now. Congrats, K. You did exactly what pretty much any HS coach in America could do with those rosters. Yawn......

Hey, NO WAY. It will be a prick coach, again.

Surprised he's not holding a press conference to turn it down. And another for the 2020 team. And another for the 2024 team, etc. etc.

In this day and age Olympic success is ALL about which players choose to go. This year Team USA suited up 4 of the All NBA first team and 8 of the 15 total all NBA players. K didn't do a bad job, but the only way even a "pretty good" coach could screw that up would be by over coaching. In 2004, Team USA had exactly one All NBA player (Duncan) , no shooters and a nightmare PG rotation of Marbury and Iverson. Our best simply weren't willing to suit up. People can't really knock K for the job he did, but IMO the coaching effort required was fairly minimal.

Thank God, watching this Gold Medal game so far is painful. We have shot more 3's than 2's. I want to see the most athletic basketball players in the world dunking on everyone, not shooting 3's

Quote" Mike Krzyzewski's last game as U.S. coach "
I know that Durham was like a third world city when I would venture over there from the Hill in the late 60's (It smelled like tobacco) but it is still in the U.S. isn't it? Does this mean wojo or chrissy will be taking over? wink.gif

It's got to be draining going from the NCAA's to putting together the Olympic team and by the time they're done your back at school getting your college team together. No down time and being around all the NBA guys has to be draining. Nothing left to feed his own ego.

I would have loved to have seen us win by 1 point but needing some miraculous shot from 1/2 court to win and having had 10-12 very questionable calls from refs go our way in the last 2 minutes at which we were trailing by 10 points. So we get the trophy but everyone is all over K and the team for being the 2012 version of the 1972 Russians. Yeah, I do dislike K that much.

hey stone , i believe if you would have given either coach that much time to get a commitment from those players back then , they would have WON THE GOLD ALSO .. ( hell STEVIE WONDER could have coached these players )

I think K will coach in 2016 and become the highest paid coach in history. Dook gives his $100mil per year

You know what gets me about K at the Olympics. Every game all he did was sit on the bench and watch. Not one word to the officials. At dook K's on his feet the whole game cursing out the refs over every single play and they take it from him. K kept his mouth shut at the Olympics because they'd have tossed him faster than Usain Bolt runs the 100. Another thing, the US defense was horrible at times. Did K ever say anything to the players? Nope. At dook if K's guys loaf on D he calls timeout and threatens them with their lives. It's like K was a totally different guy at the Olympics. Not a total d-bag. But you know come Feb K will be back to his usual obnoxious self. I guess what happens in London stays in London.

You can't treat the best professional players in he world the same way you do college kids. He was smart enough to NOT be himself with these guys

So true. In the end, k got the F out of the way. So I suppose he did a pretty good job.

Yeah, I'll bet. About two years down the road his ego will get the best of him and he'll be back.....................

Well he will be coaching the Lakers and dook by then

What did K have to do with selecting the right talent? The challenge was putting a program in place that actually constructed a team and allowed them to play together. Once that happened, the die were cast. Read any article describing K's recruiting since 2008 - and the Olympics are K's main, if not only, sales line to recruits. And it's been working. Kyrie Irving would not have gone there if K isn't the Olympics coach, IMO. It's actually miraculous he leans so heavily on the Olympics experience since he does have his own great product to sell

Why not Roy in 2016? He beats K like a cheap drum. K owes DES for getting him the gig. Pay back time!

Even with my blue-tinted contacts out, I see K as having:
1. Gained immense publicity and priceless bragging rights with which to further his "real money" raiser, his "Leader of Men" books, speaking engagements and eventual move to NBA coach.
2. Stood by pretty much and watched the 12 best players in the world play. Nothing he could have said or done would change one iota of ego, shooting skill or playing style. He did this for Coach K, not the USA. Sorry.

What I said was that K didn't have a very difficult coaching job this year ... and he didn't. I find it hard to believe that there were not numerous coaches who could do exactly the same thing. But, hey, feel free to keep up the sanctimony and smugness - it's what we expect from you dookies.

What changed USA basketball was Colangelo saying, "No more AI and Starbury types."This team had LeBron, Kobe, and Durant, so even the marginally questionable characters knew to fall in line
