Remember when you convinced me that you should read the part of the nurse in " Romeo & Juliet"? You respectfully — and wisely — reminded me that in Elizabethan times, a man indeed would have read all of the female parts since women weren't allowed on stage. With standardized testing time part of our own March madness in the world of public schools, I recently shared another "Marvelous Marvin" anecdote with my students. I so enjoy reminiscing about the spring of 2001 when you raised your hand from your favorite back corner of the classroom to inquire, "Mrs. D., if the kids in Washington state have to take the Iowa test, do the ones living in Iowa take the Washington test?" At the time of frosh basketball tryouts when you brought me the mandatory grade check, I promised to put in a good word for you with the coach. There was never any doubt that you would make the team, but you didn't allow my ignorance regarding your athletic skills to override your consistently polite attitude. You simply grinned and said, "Thanks a lot." Then do you recall our time in the vocational lab when freshmen were instructed to choose a career path? You told the counselor that you planned to be a professional basketball player, and although she and I entertained the notion for a few moments — we told you to select a more realistic option. As graciously as always, you humored us right back and did as requested. Marvin, your talent has earned much-deserved positive press. But you also are fondly remembered by many for your courtesy, your kindness and your pleasant demeanor. Thank you for being such a wonderful part of my class, of Bremerton High School and of our Kitsap community. In a land where Husky purple and Cougar crimson abound, there has been a recent surge of Tar Heel support. We are all so proud of you and are rooting for UNC to continue all the way to the top.
